It may only be February, but in a few short weeks, the clocks move forward again and finally there will be more daylight in our lives. Spring will finally have sprung! If you have spent the last month or so paying off your Christmas debts, you may well be in the mood for a bit of early spring retail therapy, and what better place to go than the Kingfisher Centre in Redditch?
Easy to locate in Redditch town centre and simply accessed from any one of the four large car parks, the Centre has changed dramatically in the last couple of years and plans are afoot to make further improvements this year. Inside, the malls are light, bright and airy and there's a plethora of stores to choose from, whether you're looking for something for yourself, your home or a gift.
The Kingfisher is famous locally for its palm trees, which were reinstated in autumn 2005 in the Centre's main square, Worcester Square, following a refurbishment. The palms are housed in giant pots that also double up as a convenient area to sit and rest while you contemplate which of the many stores to visit next.
The Centre is also home to some of the West Midlands' most significant public art, in the form of the Paolozzi mosaics - well worth a visit if you haven't seen them before. Insured for several million pounds, the mosaics were one of the largest publicly commissioned works of art in Britain during the 20th century. Each of the 12 panels measures 21 x 10 ft and sits high above Millward Square. Visitors come from all over the UK to see the mosaics created by the founder of the British pop art movement - Paolozzi passed away just last year, but his works will remain at the Kingfisher as a constant memorial to this celebrated artist.
With 16 cafes and restaurants offering a quick snack or a more substantial meal, and hair salons Toni & Guy and Trade Secrets to give your hair some spring therapy, you will find everything you need for a great day out. You may even be thinking as far ahead as your summer holiday, and if so, a number of travel agents are available to help you organise the perfect break.
Whatever you're looking for this spring, the Kingfisher Centre in Redditch can give you a New Year spring in your step.
