I t is the character of the British to be individuals and that spirit of individualism is often found in unexpected places. Barnards Green in Malvern is a case in point. Officially part of Malvern, the small area half a mile from the centre of the famous hill town retains a character that is all its own.

Barnards Green encompasses residential areas but is most famous for the run of shops that line the main Barnards Green Road, which forks around either side of the grassed Twelve Apostles Island.

A bustling centre, Barnards Green has a shop for everything. There's a greengrocer, a fishmonger, a cheese speciality shop, the supermarket, pet shops and a great selection of gift and card shops, not to mention the famous hardware store, Dobsons. There are also many places to eat, including Indian and Chinese food.

Jane Knowles, owner of gift shop Just So, says:"There are lots of independent shops in Barnards Green and that's what gives the shopping area its distinct character. People come here knowing they can get more or less everything they need in one trip without having to travel further afield."

Jane's shop is a perfect illustration of the types of shop in Barnards Green. It is independent and sells an amazing selection of carefully chosen gifts and cards that have been handpicked to offer people something different and more personal. "High street shops just don't offer the variety that independent shops can offer," she said.

So whether you re looking for a special gift for Christmas or simply want to buy some great local produce for supper, a visit to Barnards Green won't disappoint.
