A MARRIAGE of traditional family values to the very latest technical advances provides the key to the enduring - and increasing - success of one family-run Herefordshire business.

Appearances can be deceptive, and none more so than the building housing Markhams Garage, in Kingsland, near Leominster.

Looking like a set from Midsomer Murders, the picturesque black-and-white building provides little hint of the expertise and skill offered by the seven-strong team to an ever-growing number of Herefordshire's drivers.

Markhams Garage has been an integral element of village life for some 80 years, started in the 1920s by Maurice and Percy Markham and enjoying a huge boom during the war years, providing, among other things, a 24-hour taxi service for the troops stationed locally.

Bryan Markham, who has recently decided to hand over the day-to-day running of the business to the next generation, joined the family firm in the mid-60s and embarked on a programme of modernisation and development.

Today, Markhams continues to enjoy a great reputation for the quality of its servicing, repairs and MOTs, a reputation that brings not only repeat business, but a steady growth in new business.

The continued commitment to the best service and customer care now lies in the hands of Bryan's daughter, Lisa Juson, step-son Tavey Cameron-Swan and honorary family member Simon Powney.

"Simon's been with us since he was 16," says Lisa "He's been here forever, so he feels like he is a member of the family."

DOING WHAT WE DO BEST

Out with the old and in with the new can often mean change for change's sake, but staff at Markhams know the value of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', whether it relates to the vehicles they maintain or the business they're running.

"Nothing will change with Dad's retirement," says Lisa, who is responsible for the administration of the business.

"Our main plan is to continue doing what we do best. We take great pride in ourselves and in keeping our customers happy."

Helping Lisa in the office with the admin is Becki White and, bringing the team up to full strength are Chris Moore who, during his training, was twice judged top trainee mechanic in the county, Bryan's brother-in-law Godfrey and, three days a week, Alan Lewis provides additional expert help.

In an era when the personal touch can get lost in a corporate approach, Markhams continues to offer the kind of customer care that remains highly prized.

"We ensure we get to know everyone who comes through the door," says Lisa.

"And we are going

from strength to strength."
