Radnor Timber Company (RTC) is a family-run business based in Powys on the Welsh borders. Core business is the manufacture of high quality timber framed structures made from English and European Oak. Whilst some products are from a standard design, most are built to a customer's specific requirements.
Oak has been used for hundreds of years as the 'structural bones' in timber framed buildings. Native Oak was primarily used for framing because of its natural strength and durability against weather and insect attack. Add to that the fact that an oak frame is maintenance free as well as being extremely attractive explains why traditional framing is experiencing a revival.
The weathered appearance (silvery grey) of oak is unrivalled - it simply improves with age.
The oak used for framing is green (sawn within a short time of the tree being felled) and not seasoned.
The timber still has a high moisture content and is very easy to work with compared to seasoned oak.
Also, the economics are far more favourable when using green as it takes many years to season the large sections often used in the frames, increasing the material costs.
Projects which incorporate glazing require seasoned timber so as to avoid excessive movement. The seasoned glazing units can be fitted into a green frame with specialists skills.
The frames are manufactured from working drawings at RTC's workshop near Presteigne. Each frame is traditionally jointed and numbered before being transported to site by self offloading vehicles.
The frame is then erected and drawpegged either by the RTC workforce, a local builder/carpenter or by the clients themselves.
RTC manufactures frames and structures for a very large range of uses, these are just a few examples:
Residential - houses, bungalows, annexes, lodges
Outbuildings - offices, workshops, garages, studios, summerhouses, carports
Extensions - house extensions, conservatories, garden rooms, entrance porches
Barn conversions - exposed floor beams and joists, roof trusses and rafters
Garden structures - bridges, decks, pergolas, arbours, gazebos
Shooting, fishing and forest lodges
A new addition to the company is a range of standard outbuildings which are designed to offer clients a variety of building options whilst avoiding the extra costs involved in a bespoke design. There are five layouts to choose from, two of which can be erected without
planning approval in most circumstances. Three layouts can utilise the roof space as a first floor office, studio, workshop or store.
Each layout offers various bay options with working drawings for site and planning assistance available.
Sales staff offer a personal, professional service combined with a wealth of experience.
