A TALE of dark secrets, power and intrigue would seem perfect for Ian Richardson, well-known for his portrayal of Machiavellian politician Francis Urquhart in the BBC's House of Cards trilogy.

But, in this case, he is not The Creeper of the play's title - but, it would seem, the victim.

Pauline Macauley's play - which opens at Malvern Theatres on Monday - is set in the mid-1960s and depicts a young opportunist who works his way into the home of a prosperous member of the landed gentry - played in this instance by esteemed actor Ian Richardson.

Ian says this latest challenge has meant him adopting a more unusual role, different from his usual stage and screen personas.

"I play a misogynist who was mistreated by his mother. Although he is not a homosexual, he prefers male company. He is very wealthy and eccentric so it is a nice change for me to play him," he says.

Ian, who was made a CBE in 1989, added Olivier award-winning director Bill Bryden had done an excellent job reviving the play.

"He and I knew each other in the 60s. I've never worked with him before, however. He is a charming man and an excellent director."

Malvern Theatres is one of only two venues to scoop a preview of the tense and dangerous tale of the unexpected before it transfers to the West End.

And Ian says he is looking forward to performing in Malvern for the first time.

"I understand it is a fabulous venue. I am looking forward to it very much as I haven't had a stage role for around 10 years."

When asked why Worcester News readers should go and see The Creeper, he added: "It's a great evening's entertainment."

l The Creeper plays at Malvern Theatres from Monday, January 30 to Saturday, February 4.
