HISTORY society: A talk on the history of magic lanterns from 1847 onwards was given by Patrick Furley at Moreton Local History Society's November meeting attended by 60 members. He not only brought several original lanterns operated by candle, limelight or carbide but also gave an entertaining show of glass slides of long ago on a 1928 projector.
It was announced that the society is producing another Christmas calendar of old photos again this year covering events from 1867 to 1977. Included is a colour reproduction of a rare comic postcard of passengers travelling in open carriages on the old Moreton to Shipston line, one of the earliest railways in the country. The calendar is being produced by committee member Mike Rees and can be obtained from him (telephone 01608 650825) or The Card Shop in Old Market Way, Moreton.
A successful financial year was reported at a committee meeting of the society by treasurer John Barnes who said it would be unnecessary to raise the existing subscription of £5. Ray Poulton was congratulated on organising the summer outings, which turned in a good profit, and suggestions were made for next year's programme. It was agreed to hold the society's party after Christmas instead of before as in the past. The date chosen was Friday, January 6, at the WI Hall with a magician to provide entertainment.
INTEREST AND LEISURE CLUB: After a few frustrating traffic jams around Moreton the coach finally was on the road to Bristol and Cribbs Causeway.
Members stepped off the coach at Cribbs Causeway around 11.20am and once inside the shopping mall were greeted by spectacular Christmas decorations.
Mavis McLoughlin on behalf of all members gave a vote of thanks to Angela and Alan.
