REMEMBRANCE SERVICES: Harvington First School's Remembrance Service took place in the school hall on Friday and was attended by parents and several members of St James' Church congregation. The children filed in silently and stood solemnly holding their poppies while Mervyn Huggins, whom they have met on many such occasions, spoke to them about the meaning of what was taking place. Pupils read out the names of the local men who died in the two wars. At the appropriate time, there was total silence in the hall following the playing of the Last Post by Mrs Helen Winterbourne. Prayers were said by the Rev Fran Battin, who was meeting the children for the first time since coming to the village.

Sunday morning's service in St James' Church was attended by more than 100 people. In welcoming everyone, the Rector said how delighted he was to have friends from the Baptist church sharing the occasion; he also gave an especially warm welcome to Brownies who were attending and who, he said, would be leading the prayers. The service followed its traditional pattern, wreaths being laid at the appropriate time by Steve Salter currently serving on HMS Nottingham at Portsmouth, and by John Redman on behalf of the parish council, after which all the members of the congregation in their turn walked in silence up to the altar to lay their poppies.

TOP BRAINS: The Brains of Harvington challenge quiz was held in the village hall last Saturday, with 10 teams made up of members of the various village organisations taking part. The winning team was from The Golden Cross, whose name will be engraved on the plaque on the village hall wall. Jess Fairs, on behalf of Sue Coley, the social committee chairman, thanked everybody for being present and contributing to the success of the evening, mentioning particularly Rosemary and Alan Hirst who had provided the quiz and acted as MC and, with Florence and Bernard Dyson, done the marking.
