CORRECT me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that Fireworks Night was on November 5.
Why then, I wonder, have some people been letting fireworks off every night since the clocks were altered at the end of October? Every night, as soon as it gets dark, the explosions begin. Perhaps my calendar is wrong?
As I write, a full week after the official Guy Fawkes night, my dog is a quivering wreck in her basket and has been every night for the past three weeks. Why is there this recent childish obsession with fireworks? And I suspect it is not just children who enjoy them but more likely adults who haven't quite grown up. I have no objection to people having their bit of fun and letting their fireworks off (if that is what turns them on) on November 5 and even on new Years Eve. But why every night? Indeed, why have a Guy Fawkes night at all if fireworks are going to be let off every night throughout the winter?
