A FOLK duo now have an international fan base after taking their interpretation of traditional Greek music to its county of origin.
Accordionist Paul Morris, of Malvern Wells, and violinist Kathy Holmes, of Suckley, who perform as folk duo Valenki, spent a week on Corfu and bravely served up some home-grown music.
They performed their own shows and played with local musicians as part of a combined trip with the Worcestershire-based Volante String Orchestra, of which Kathy is a member.
The week was rounded off by a successful evening concert by candlelight in the Anglican church in Corfu Town, before an audience of locals and international visitors.
Their varied international repertoire was well-received, with the selection of traditional Greek music striking a particular chord.
"The local people were delighted to hear their own music being played by their English visitors," said Paul. "We're very pleased, as it confirms that our sound is pretty authentic."
Although the trip marked only the second time the duo had performed for a live audience, Paul said they were not nervous.
"The atmosphere was very relaxing and we felt very comfortable," he said.
Paul and Kathy both teach at Worcester's Elgar School of Music and started playing together earlier this year, after Kathy saw Paul perform solo at Huntingdon Hall.
"Kathy shared my interest in traditional music and was interested in performing together," said Paul. "We gave it a go and it's all working out very well."
Valenki's immediate priorities are performing locally and recording a CD, but they hope to embark on similar trips in the future.
"The local residents were very enthusiastic for a return visit," said Paul. "We made a lot of connections and I can foresee many return trips in the future."
