THE macabre story of barber Sweeney Todd was enacted by WODS with John Brenan, full of evil intent, creating the title role.
His partner in crime was Mrs Lovett (Jacque Cook), flagrant with musical comedy gusto and a cook of monstrous pies.
As the tale unfolded and numerous characters were killed off at the barber's hands, it became apparent what gave the pies their individual flavours! This pair provided many laughs and moments of drama.
Characters central to the plot included Anthony, a sailor returning home and lovesick for Johanna, performed by Adrian Rogerson and Laura Synnuck. Tender moments were shared as they sang Kiss Me.
Pirelli, an Irish-turned-Italian barber, was flamboyantly depicted by Andy Gilhooly and Ann Mayor's Beggar Woman was disgustingly provocative. Judge Turpin and Tobias Ragg, Michael Staiger and Kit Windows-Yule, each sang particularly well.
The chorus moved effectively and most of the libretto was clearly enunciated, as it was by soloists also. Stage management was on the move continuously and the cumbersome set became tedious.
John Griswold directed the excellent sensitive and supportive group of musicians.
Sweeney Todd continues until tomorrow (Saturday). JILL HOPKINS
