DEMON barber Sweeney Todd comes to Malvern Theatres this month as Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society celebrates its 50th production at the venue.

The show, from Tuesday to Saturday, October 18-22, will be very special for one cast member. Sonia Armstrong, nee Sonia Davis, played one of the principal parts in Ivor Novello's Kings Rhapsody when the society made its debut at the theatres in 1955.

Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street is based on a 19th Century legend of a homicidal London barber, driven to crime when a malevolent judge takes his wife and child from him.

His plans for revenge include a cut-throat partnership with Mrs Lovett, an enterprising bar mistress, renowned for her 'special pies'.

Sweeney Todd tickets, priced from £9 to £12.50, are available from 01684 892277.
