GARDENING SOCIETY: The society's annual show produced a spectacular display of flowers, plants, fruit, vegetables and floral art. With a total of 183 exhibits, this was an increase on last year's entries.
The visiting judge, Mike Oliver, presented Frances Freeman with the society's Rose Bowl for achieving the most points in the horticultural section. Second was Tessa Webb, who was awarded the George Cope Cup. The Marjorie Irons Cup, for the most points in the vegetable section, was presented to Jim Lewis, whose wife, Joyce, won the Bidford Flower Cup for the highest score in the floral art section. Frances Freeman was also the winner of the Best in Show award for her sunflowers, receiving the Jordan Vase.
The speaker in September was Philip Aubury, director of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, who gave a talk on vegetable growing.
The competition for any three vegetables resulted: 1 Pam Smith, 2 Lally Cox, 3 Neil Ferguson, 4 Jim Lewis.
The next meeting on October 20, entitled From Diaz to Diamonds, will be a talk on South Africa's gardens given by Timothy Walker.
Visitors and new members are welcome to attend meetings on the third Thursday of each month at the Crawford Memorial Hall. For details, ring Annette Haines on 01789 268974.
BADSEY: Vale Lacemakers are having an open day at Badsey Village Hall on Saturday from 11am to 3pm. This is an opportunity to watch lacemaking in progress, see displays of members work and to have a go. Tea and coffee will be available, and admission is free.
