It's time to say bye bye to boho and hello to a sleeker, more elegant look that shows off your curves and silhouette. High heels are back with a vengeance, along with tight pencil skirts and fitted ladylike jackets. This season we're embracing all things womanly and feminine, but it's not about romance -- think of a vampish, sexy you.
Shelly Vella, Cosmopolitan's fashion director, says: "This autumn is an exciting season. There's such a cross-section of trends to choose from that everyone should be kept happy. There's lots of great high street clothes out there, so the discerning shopper will not be bored."
VICTORIANA
"The Victoriana blouse tends to be paired either with the military jacket for a retro and vintage look, or it could be worn with masculine tailoring to add a feminine touch.
"This is very wearable and is an alternative to the 1950s glamour two-piece suits. Simply wear a wide-legged pair of trousers with a jumper -- and there you go!"
Victorian lace-front knee-high boots are also gaining attention this season, which you can find at most shoe stores, including Faith.
Dorothy Perkins, George at Asda, Kookai and Morgan have a great selection of Victorian inspired pieces you can take your pick from, from pretty Victorian blouses to silky lace camisoles.
TAILORING
"There's a move towards 1950s film and screen star glamou,. Skirt suits, princess line coats, pencil skirts and high heels show off the body and sculpt curves, for a sexy and sophisticated starlet silhouette," says Shelly.
"Real fur was everywhere on the catwalks, but fake fur is more than acceptable," she adds, admitting she felt sick at the prospect of real fur being used so readily.
To get the same look head to stores like Next, Principles, Oasis and Topshop, which have slinky blouses, tailored pencil skirts, cute ladylike jackets that nip in at the waist, and fake fur stoles.
MILITARY
"The most approachable way to wear the new military or nautical look is to wear a coat. Think big brass buttons, detailing on the jacket and the fitted shape of the coat," explains Shelly.
Team your jacket with a dress or a summery skirt for a soft take on military. After all, you merely want the look, not look like you've just walked out of the Army.
H&M, River Island, Wallis and Warehouse all have affordable jackets that won't break the bank. And the surprising bestseller is Primark's version.
PURPLE OPULENCE
"Dark purple and black are back this winter, to add a gothic feel to outfits. Purple is a softer colour than black, and is quite practical, slimming and easy to
wear," says Shelly.
While you can find purple in many high street stores already, such as Gap, Laura Ashley, Matalan and Monsoon, it will play a more important role in evening wear as we count down to Christmas.
For now though, you can get your berry fix with plenty of purple tops, skirts and knitwear -- and don't miss out on Gap's rich royal purple cords.
RUSSIAN
"If your personality says boho and you don't want to say goodbye to the trend just yet, just adapt it to the Russian and folklore trend," says Shelly.
"It's all about the embroidery, and the opulence that's very Russian princess. Go folksy -- but this is more for the slightly eccentric, rather than retiring types."
Jazz up a simple outfit with an embroidered skirt at Marks & Spencer and Miss Selfridge, or team an embroidered top with a pair of smart jeans.
But if you're feeling more confident, try an embroidered coat.
