This film is a recipe for disaster.
Take a classic film, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, change the Sydney Poitier starring role to a white man (Ashton Kutcher), add a gimmicky racial twist and a sprinkle of bad taste and you have the perfect flaccid comedy.
Percy (Bernie Mac) is the disapproving father who is shocked to discover his daughter Theresa has fallen for a white city guy, Simon.
With Percy's predictable resistance to his future son-in-law, the ensuing scenes strike an unflattering resemblance to the comedy found in Meet the Parents.
Yet there is no comparison as Kutcher's performance is poor and lacks any charismatic humour and
Mac plays his part in a humdrum sit-com style.
And on a similar note, mother (Judith Scott) and daughter (Zoe Saldana) are pretty much kept in the background.
The film touches on racial issues in a superficial way and any issues of political correctness are overcome as it is the black man who is instigating the prejudice.
On a lighter note, there are a few comic moments - particularly a scene where the car radio continually plays songs of racial harmony as Percy and Simon sit in awkward silence.
But despite this, the laughs are few and far between and I could think of far better ways to spend 101 minutes of my time.
