THE carousel just keeps on spinning for theatrical duo David Humphries and Rachel Price, who first set foot on the stage together 21 years ago and now form a dynamic team of producer and choreographer for a leading amateur dramatics society.

David and Rachel, who both live in the city, are currently in rehearsal for Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society's production of Carousel to be staged at Malvern Theatres in October.

It is the third time the couple have been involved with the wonderful Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, which drew them together back in 1983.

Rachel, taking part in her first show with the group at the age of 16, played the role of Louise and had to dance with David who, 13 years her senior, was in the part of the carnival boy.

"I must admit I was rather nervous at the prospect of dancing with David and I don't think either of us dreamt we would still be working together in amateur dramatics 21 years later," said Rachel

"I don't think we had any idea we would go on to direct and choreograph shows at all," said David, who became a member of WODS in 1972 and has performed in more than 30 shows for the society, including many principal roles.

"We just enjoy working together," said Rachel. "We seem to know how each other ticks and we think the same, have the same ideas. Of course, we have 'discussions', but I would not say we actually fall out."

During 1982, David helped in the formation of WODS' youth section, WODYS, and has been heavily involved in bringing them from their humble beginnings to today's high standard.

The youth group's recent successful show, Return to the Forbidden Planet, was David's 20th as director and producer for WODYS. He is also the section's chairman.

Rachel joined WODS junior dancing class at the age of 11 and became a member of WODYS when it was founded.

She has performed in many WODS' shows.

In 1987, she became choreographer for WODYS and this will be the fourth show she has choreographed for WODS and the fourth show that David has directed for them.

In 1998 the youngsters performed Carousel at The Swan Theatre with David directing and Rachel choreographer.

"Of course, working with the adult section on the show is completely different to when we did Carousel with the youngsters," said Rachel.

"The youngsters are very enthusiastic, while the older ones are more mature with lots of experience."

Rachel, who is catering manager at Bishop Perowne CE High School, Worcester, is mum to seven-year-old Rebecca and Lucy, aged four. Rebecca is also in WODS' October production of Carousel, appearing as the youngest of the Snow children.

The show is a family affair for David as well. His youngest son, James, is in it.

His wife, Christina, will be on hand with needle and thread in the costume department.

She is WODYS' wardrobe mistress, but helps out with the adult shows. Eldest son, Carl, will be the stage manager.

Carousel, with its splendid scenery, fine costumes and musical gems including If I Loved You, June Is Busting Out All Over and You'll Never Walk Alone, is at The Festival Theatre from Tuesday, October 19, to Saturday, October 23.
