ARTISTS in all fields are invited to the Arthouse caf in Worcester's CrownGate tonight to join in the first anniversary celebrations of Phillip Newth, a city based art project that specialises in alternative cabaret.

A year ago, two Worcester-born youths ran an internet search for a random first name in connection with Worcester and came across a 62-year-old children's book writer, Phillip Newth, born in the city, but now living in Norway.

They decided to adopt Phillip as a new cultural patron saint for local DIY art and have organised several events in his honour.

The real Philip has since been in touch and, pleased to have been reminded of his native city, has been supportive of the project.

A small magazine has also been printed and distributed free and liberally, with a democratic and non-judgemental tone. The next issue, for which contributions are still needed, should be completed before the following cabaret evening on Saturday, September 4 at the Worcester Arts Workshop.

Previous events have involved elements of dance, music, poetry and experiments in entertainment, but the organisers are also inviting theatrical and story-telling talents along tonight.

This time of year in particular might find performers with pieces fresh in their minds, not least those following arts courses.

All ages and experiences are welcomed and contact in advance is not necessary, as a chaotic yet inclusive night is always anticipated.

The times are 7.30pm for an 8pm start with a conclusion around 11pm. The cost for non-performers is £5 on the door and children are admitted free. A hot buffet supper costs £5 with a vegetarian option.

The Arthouse cafe is above Huntingdon Hall in the CrownGate shopping centre, Worcester.
