THE Academy of Ancient Music, one of the finest period-instrument orchestra in the world, comes to Hereford this Saturday as part of a 10-concert tour, under the umbrella of Orchestras Live.

The concert features concertos for two violins and oboe by Bach and Vivaldi, culminating in Bach's famous double violin concerto in D minor.

The award-winning violinist Rachel Podger, much feted for her recording success, heads a distinguished line up of soloists including oboist Frank de Bruine.

"We know many people from the area travel to Birmingham, Cardiff and Cheltenham to hear classical music, but this is a fantastic opportunity to experience top quality orchestral music on your doorstep," said Courtyard chief executive Martyn Green.

The period-instrument orchestra performs baroque music on the instruments for which it was written, giving the audience an insight into the sounds and atmosphere of the period.

Also featuring in this season's Courtyard music programme is the Syd Lawrence Orchestra.

Combining a mix of swing, dance and jazz music together with fun, laughter and comedy, this is a great live music show, full of variety.

The orchestra was formed by Syd Lawrence, who built his reputation on playing the music of Glenn Miller.

These days, led by trombonist Chris Dean, the orchestra plays popular music from all the Big Band greats.

Get into the swing tomorrow (Friday) night at 7.30pm.
