THE enigmatic frontman of a Kidderminster rock band is appealing for support to drum up cash for a centre supporting victims of rape and sexual abuse.

Nick Townsend said metal outfit, Weak13, had arranged a concert in aid of Worcestershire Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre because "we can't do everything but we can, at least, do something".

He explained they needed as many people as possible to go to the event on Tuesday, February 22, at Redwoods in Dixon Street, Kidderminster, so they could raise hundreds of pounds for the cause.

"The world can be a very dangerous place," he said.

"We all need help sometimes, someone to talk to, somebody to listen to us and this centre is there for those people."

He added the band, which recently changed from a five to three-piece outfit with a new bass player who goes by the name of Cannon Fodder, would be playing a special set for the evening, including several acoustic numbers.

"It's a really important subject and we're just going to do the right music for the mood, so we've written some songs especially," he added.

"We write songs to make people feel better about themselves and make people believe they are not on their own and that everyone suffers the same kinds of problems."

He said two members of the band, Girls Love Ponies, would also perform an acoustic set, as well as Drew Crumpton from Oak and solo artist, Dan Hunt.

Mr Townsend is no stranger to charity work, having previously raised cash for Kidderminster War Memorial Conservation Trust and Kemp Hospice, and said this month's fund-raiser would be the first of many in the coming year.

A representative from the centre will be there on the night, accepting donations, while all money taken on the door will be donated to the cause.

The centre offers a free, confidential service and operates a helpline from 7.30pm until 9.30pm on Mondays and Thursdays, which can be contacted on 01905 724514.
