THERE'S no doubt that the Pepperpot Players know how to put on a good panto.
Their production of Rumplestiltskin.com had everything an audience could hope for. A larger-than-life Dame (Mike Morgan), a loveable idiot (Ben Wilson as Hayrick), an evil baddie (Vicky O'Rourke as Rumplestiltskin) and colourful chorus.
Vicky O'Rourke was brilliant as the malignant, wheeler-dealer cockney elf of the title and took up the role with relish.
Ben Wilson was well cast as Hayrick, sidekick of N.Carter Blackviper (Paul O'Rourke) and the pair made a very convincing 'Baldrick and Blackadder'. Hayrick preening himself in a posh frock was one of the pantomime's many highlights.
As principal boy Hughlet, Prince of Lexmark, Natalie Gardiner was hilarious, employing a comic what-ho! upper-class accent and some very animated expressions, although sadly, little in the way of thigh slapping.
Special mention must also go to Martin Harker, bravely dressed in tights, dress and fetching blonde wig as a bitchy Ulrika Volvo, contestant on Who Wants to Be a Princess Fair? I doubt he will ever live it down.
The leads were well supported by the chorus, who demonstrated impressive song and dance routines. Jack Tomkins made everyone laugh dressed in an Elvis costume as an elf who misunderstands his costume brief.
The panto features a host of well-known songs, professionally performed by the Players' band who soon had everyone singing along.
The pantomime runs until tomorrow (Saturday) in Upton Memorial Hall.
