SIR Donald Sinden performs in The Hollow Crown at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre from tomorrow.
First devised in 1961 by John Barton for the RSC, The Hollow Crown has proved to be one of their most successful and enduring productions staged, with more than 70 actors performing it over the years.
The play also stars Alan Howard, Richard Johnson and Harriet Walter and is described as "a celebratory entertainment about the Kings and Queens of England".
An RSC spokesman said: "The Hollow Crown gives a human face to the English monarchy.
"Fifteen-year-old Jane Austen's 'partial, prejudiced and ignorant historian's' account of the monarchy from Henry IV to Charles I, embodies the essence of this sardonic, affectionate and comic look into the changing role of the kings and queens throughout the ages."
The play replaces the previously scheduled run of Hecuba, starring Vanessa Redgrave.
The play's run was cancelled to give Ms Redgrave time to recuperate from an operation.
The Hollow Crown runs until March 19.
Details of performance times together with tickets, priced £6-£40, are available from the box office on 0870 609 1110 or online at www.rsc.org.uk
