ONE or two of our senior citizens seem to be in need of a little education about disability. I wonder if I may be permitted, through the pages of your newspaper, to offer some enlightenment?

I am a 46-year-old man with multiple sclerosis. My mobility is significantly impaired and I hold a blue badge parking permit. It is my good fortune (or misfortune, depending on one's perspective) to be of relatively young appearance.

Last weekend I had occasion to park my car in a disabled parking space at a well known supermarket in Stow-on-the-Wold.

I placed my permit on the dashboard, but had not even got out of the vehicle before an elderly man in an adjacent car began berating me for parking there.

This kind of thing has happened to me on several occasions and I have lost count of the number of scowls I have received from elderly and disabled motorists Frustratingly, I often find that these individuals turn out to be appreciably more mobile than I am.

So, come on, folks! Disability isn't the preserve of the elderly. Many young people are, regrettably, disabled by illness or accident, so please will you stop and consider this before launching into a reprimand?
