Despite the fact that our local councillors are Lib Dems, I have to say that I am impressed at their speed in reacting to the gypsies encamped on Abbey Park, Pershore this week.
Perhaps this has something to do with an impending election. Or it may be that having these people take residence on Council land will be seen as many as the ultimate insult. Whatever the Council's motives, I'm pleased that the reaction has been so swift.
This incidence does raise several issues, not least of which is the continued lack of a proper policy to find permanent places for these people who continue to flout the law and do as they please. With the Eckington site has now being closed, I wonder what thought was given to finding a suitable, alternative site. I assume that when this lot are kicked off Abbey Park they will inevitably invite themselves to become neighbours of some of your readers.
Finally, I agree with the Councillors that this issue should be dealt with peacefully and lawfully but there can be no doubt that the generally soft, 'namby pamby' attitude we adhere to has only encouraged these people to take advantage of local citizens. These days the criminals know they can get away with it.
Mike Andrews, St Andrew's Road, Pershore.
