THE violent age of the 12th century crusades is resurrected Ridley Scott-style in his latest action epic .

This film has blockbuster written all over it, with its common man-turned heroic knight plot line, colossal battle scenes and sizzling love triangle.

Unsurprisingly, it reeks of Scott's award winning epic Gladiator but sadly lacks the touching human-interest subplot to win over moviegoers in the same way.

Bailian (Orlando Bloom) is the moody young blacksmith who joins his estranged father (Liam Neeson) on the road to Jerusalem, where Christians and Muslims battle to capture the Holy Land.

His father dies before reaching Jerusalem but not before knighting Bailian, who continues the journey to the troubled city.

A series of glorious battles ensue with Bailian proving himself a fine and worthy knight.

His heroics capture the heart of Princess Sibylla- the wife of his nearest rival, Guy Lusignan- adding further conflict to the plot.

Visually, Kingdom of Heaven is stunning and a beefier looking Bloom tackles this demanding role impressively.

Although not of the same calibre as Gladiator, this is certainly worth seeing, if just for the spectacular battle scenes.
