A DISPARATE group meeting for weekly tap dance lessons might not sound like a barrel of laughs but that's exactly what Stepping Out is.

The characters' differing backgrounds and personal dilemmas combine in turn to create hilarious, poignant and dramatic moments. As the pupils struggle to get to grips with the basic steps under the guidance of Mavis, played by Patsy Palmer, a bigger picture of their lives beyond the church hall emerges.

Two of the brightest stars are Sara Weymouth as busybody Vera, and Suzie Chard, delivering witty one-liners as long-suffering Sylvia. But one of the nicest parts about this production is no one character takes the spotlight - each woman (and token man) has a chance to shine.

The only disappointing performance came from 'star' Patsy Palmer. Her dancing was commendable but her wooden acting and distinct lack of comic timing meant her co-stars eclipsed her at every turn.
