BIRMINGHAM'S Botanical Gardens are the setting for N.C. Big Band on Sunday, "celebrating all that's great from the 1930s and 40s onwards."

The music of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey and Harry James will be featured together with hits from Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald.

Spokesman Linda Keen commented: "Lead vocalist Terry Smith and dazzling female vocalist Ruth Lowe will entertain with hit songs from the Great American Songbook.

"Celebrate VE/VJ Day sixty years on and why not dress in 1940s style?"

She added: "Bring a picnic, rug or low chair and enjoy the laid back atmosphere of the Botanical Gardens. All proceeds will go towards maintaining the gardens in the seasonal splendour, peace and tranquillity we have come to love and expect."

The event begins at 6.30pm and continues through until 10pm. Tickets are £10 in advance from 0121 454 1860 or £12.50 on the night, subject to availability.
