IN the mid-1970s there was a children’s TV show called Runaround, hosted by Mike Reid (who later found fame in EastEnders). At the end of every show, he would look directly into the camera and say, in his best East End-geezer voice: “And remember kids – you be good to your mum. She’s been good to you.”
Well, this weekend is your chance to honour Mike Reid’s memory by heading to your local Worcestershire farmers’ market, buying some ingredients and cooking your mum (or the mother of your children) a special meal for tomorrow’s Mothering Sunday.
Worcestershire farmers’ market stallholders will be in Bromsgrove High Street from 9am until 5pm today, offering everything from lamb sausages to leeks, cakes and quality preserves.
You are sure to find something that your mum will love on the stalls – whether it is a homebaked fruit pie from 19 Gales Farmhouse Foods, or a special pudding from Tastebuds. Have a wander around and see what you think she might like.
Of course, tomorrow gives you the perfect opportunity to cook mum something special. Invite her over, tell her to put her feet up, open a bottle of something sweet or dry from Old Dunnington Farm and serve up a roast dinner.
You’ll find numerous options for quality roasts at today’s farmers’ market, whether your special guest prefers beef, pork, lamb or mutton.
If you want perfect roast potatoes as well, don’t forget to par-boil them in gently boiling salted water for about eight minutes then leave them to cool completely. You should then scratch them roughly with a fork and season with salt. Only roast your spuds around the joint if there is plenty of fat – at least half a centimetre – and plenty of room. It’s usually better to preheat the oil in a separate pan, adding any fat from the roasting tin just before the potatoes go in – and don’t add them until the oil is sizzling hot. Roast your spuds for the last 45 minutes of your joint’s cooking time, turning at least once.
Today’s farmers’ market is in High Street, Bromsgrove, from 9am until 5pm. Next weekend’s markets are in Abbey Road, Malvern, on Saturday, March 20, from 9am until 2pm, and in Angel Place, Worcester, from 9am until 3pm on Sunday, March 21.
