THE Worcester man who was not allowed to sell his Dad’s Army game on a website because it could incite racial hatred has decided to keep it - as a souvenir to political correctness gone mad.
Online auctioneers eBay have now said they will allow Dave Davidson, from Newtown, Droitwich, to sell the 1970s game on their site, despite originally having said they could not make any exceptions whatsoever.
But Mr Davidson, who bought the game at a car boot sale, is no longer as keen to part with the game. “It’s very kind of them to change their minds, but I don’t want to sell it now.
“I think I’ll keep it as a souvenir to political correctness gone mad.”
As your Worcester News reported earlier today, the site banned the game, which is based around the popular sitcom Dad’s Army, because the box had arrows emblazonned with swastikas on it, similar to those that appeared on the opening credits.
A letter from the company said Mr Davidson’s listing breeched their offensive material policy and that they did not allow sellers to list memorabilia or items associated with the Nazi party.
A spokeswoman for eBay stressed that more than 100 million items were for sale on the site and that it did everything it could to bar items which promoted racial hatred.
But yesterday the spokeswoman said: "While we are committed to keeping items that promote racial hatred off eBay, a Dad's Army board game is clearly not one of these.
"We hope that Captain Mainwaring would have been impressed with our efficiency!"
But Mr Davidson is less impressed. “They changed their minds when they were embarrassed in the press,” he said. “I’ll keep the board game and it will probably be left to my children - but I may search the house to see what else I can find in the mean time.”
