A WORCESTER man who lost his wife to cancer will bike through Vietnam and Cambodia to raise money in her memory.
Eddie Jones’s wife Tina died from secondary cancer in July last year. Having already battled breast cancer, she was an ardent supporter of the £2.5 million Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign, but sadly died before it became a reality.
Now 49-year-old Mr Jones, of Elliot Road, Perdiswell, is undertaking a gruelling challenge to make sure that the Worcester News-backed campaign to build a specialist breast unit set apart from the main Worcestershire Royal Hospital is a success.
“My wife had breast cancer the summer before last,” said Mr Jones.
“She had a mastectomy and realised that the hospital was quite inadequate and unable to cope in some ways which is why she had started to support this appeal. She started to get involved, but died before she could see it through. I wanted to continue in her memory.”
Mr Jones will embark on the Vietnam to Cambodia cycle ride, organised by Breast Cancer Care, on Saturday, February 13. He is due to finish on Monday, February 22.
He will travel 550km (341 miles) from Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) to Angkor Wat, passing through beautiful rural landscapes dotted with ruins of ancient civilisations and small towns where Buddhist temples nestle among graceful French colonial buildings.
To help him raise as much as possible for the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign, call 07713 975264. The aim of the campaign is to raise £2.5 million to pay for a dedicated breast cancer unit which will form a one-stop shop for breast patients at 220 Newtown Road.
The new building will give them more space and greater privacy in a less clinical and more comfortable environment.
