A GROUP of pupils at a Worcestershire school have visited India to experience life in Delhi.

As part of Droitwich High School’s Dreams and Teams project – which is funded by the British Council – the lucky group experienced the sights and sounds of India for a week. They were accompanied by three members of staff, stayed with Indian families and attended lessons with their partner pupils at Ramjas School.

The Droitwich youngsters took part in a sports event where they taught the hosts rounders and organised matches. In return the Ramjas pupils taught the Droitwich teenagers the national Indian games of coco and pitthu.

The visitors also saw some of the sights of Delhi, including the tomb of Humayun, the Lotus temple, the Red Fort and India Gate. They also went to Agra and saw the Taj Mahal.

Immersing themselves in Indian culture the Droitwich pupils were willing to be involved with everything, trying all the spices and different regional foods.

On their final night they went to the premiere of an Indian dance festival. It introduced dances from different regions, told the history of each dance and explained the costumes.

All the students struck up friendships and are excited about the return visit when they will have the chance to show the Ramjas pupils some of the sights of England and the differences between the two schools.

During their time in India the teachers were also hard at work. During the stay they worked on various joint curriculum projects with their Indian counterparts.

The most exciting project will be the involvement of the Dreams and Teams students in next year’s Commonwealth Games.
