A DRUNKEN man who bit off part of his girlfriend’s nose has been jailed for at least three years and should not be released until the parole board considers he is no longer a danger to the public.

Leyland Barrington was living in a hostel in Ombersley Road, Worcester, when he went drinking in Hereford in November last year in early celebration of his 40th birthday. He and 29-year-old Tracey Majer had drunk a large amount of alcohol before they returned to her home in Hunderton Road, Hereford. The emergency services were called at 11.30pm where they found Miss Majer who had been injured.

Barrington had gone round to his son Dwayne’s home in Chester Close where he said he had bitten Miss Majer's nose off and spit it across the room.

“If she had been a bloke, I would have killed her,” he said. He ended up punching his son.

Barrington pleaded guilty to wounding causing grievous bodily harm at Hereford Crown Court and also common assault on his son.

When he was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court, his victim was in court and was comforted by friends as she burst into tears. She declined to comment after the hearing.

Judge Daniel Pearce-Higgins QC said Barrington had a long list of previous convictions beginning with an assault when he was only 14.

He had only recently completed a seven-year sentence for wounding before the attack on Miss Majer. He had pleaded guilty on the basis that he was drunk. It would have taken a major effort to bite off a nose, said the judge.

Unfortunately, it could not be re-attached and Miss Major was having reconstructive surgery.

Because of Barrington's history of violence and the ferocity of the attack, he represented a significant risk of harm to the public. The judge said would be kept locked up until it was safe for him to be released.
