PEOPLE living and working near the river Severn were nervously watching as water levels were expected to peak today.

Some flooding has been seen along the banks of the Severn, including the car park and grounds of Worcestershire County Cricket Club.

But river levels were not expected to peak until this evening in Worcester according to the Environment Agency.

There is currently a flood warning on the Severn between Worcester and Tewkesbury, and a flood watch on the rest of the river. The agency says water levels at Diglis are expected to peak overnight tonight at 3.8 – 4.1 metres.

Yesterday, the river was already at 3.83m – the usual winter level at Diglis is 0.9m.

The river bridge at Bewdley was reopened to traffic yesterday evening although temporary flood barriers remained up at Beales Corner. The flood level for Bewdley is now expected to peak at 4.3m tonight but the total road closure through Beales Corner was lifted last night to allow two-way access to the town centre across the river bridge.

Road barriers were put up on Wednesday night, preventing through-traffic from using the bridge. Demountable barriers have been extended from Severnside North to Severnside South. Barriers also remain in place in Upton-upon-Severn.
