THE new patron of Worcester’s Swan Theatre has vowed to champion the venue’s future.

Lord Faulkner of Worcester was revealed as the theatre’s patron earlier this month when Chris Jaeger, chief executive of Worcester Live, described the 63-year-old as a “staunch supporter” of local arts.

Lord Faulkner, a Labour peer since 1999, is already a trustee of the Foundation for Sport and the Arts.

He takes over the role of patron from John Doyle, the former artistic director of the Swan, who went on to win a Tony award and become the toast of Broadway.

“I’m delighted to be the new patron of the Swan Theatre,” said Lord Faulkner. “I am continually impressed with the energy and enthusiasm of Chris and the team, and I want to help ensure that the Swan is around for the community to benefit from for generations to come.”

Lord Faulkner was at the theatre in the Moors, Worcester, on Monday, November 16, when Mr Jaeger unveiled an ambitious new scheme to refurbish the Swan Theatre Studio.

The proposed work, which follows a £800,000 refurbishment of the main theatre, would cost an estimated £2 million.

The studio block, which is currently used as offices, a workshop and a studio, would be entirely rebuilt as a three-storey building adjoining the theatre with lift.

It would also have rehearsal and performance spaces and state-of-the-art office space.

Plans will go before Worcester City Council in due course.

Lord Faulkner has said he will champion the campaign to raise the £2 million needed to carry out the work.
