TWO men were arrested on suspicion of drink driving following a crash which left a third man fighting for his life.

The injured man remains critically ill with head injuries following the crash at a notorious accident blackspot just outside of Worcester.

He was travelling in the back seat of a Ford Ka when it crashed into a bridge on the A4103 Worcester to Hereford road near the Fox Inn at Bransford at 3.20am yesterday.

Firefighters cut the injured man free from the blue car before he was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

A spokesman for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said two fire engines from Worcester were sent to the incident.

Firefighters used special cutting gear to cut the roof off the car before removing the injured man.

He was later transferred to Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry where he was said to be in a “critical” condition as your Worcester News went to press.

Two ambulances, an incident support officer, an emergency doctor and a rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The man had serious head injuries. He was taken on blue lights to Worcestershire Royal Hospital where a trauma team was on standby. The doctor travelled with the ambulance crew. A second man was immobilised after complaining of neck pain. He was taken to the same hospital. A third man had cuts and bruises but was not taken to hospital by ambulance.”

The two arrested men were both taken to Worcester Police Station.

Yesterday’s crash happened just feet away from where two Hereford teenagers were killed in January 2007. Ashley Attwood and Timothy Evans died when the car they were travelling in left the A4103 and struck a bridge near Bransford. Two 16-year-old girls were also injured in the crash.

In July this year, the Rev Ian Scott, from Droitwich, a former chaplain of Evesham Community Hospital, was killed when a car ploughed into his parked vehicle on the same road in Bransford.

•The driver of the vehicle has been bailed until Thursday, February 18. No further action will be taken against the other passenger in the car and he has been released without charge.
