TENS of thousands of people are expected to flock to the historic heart of Worcester city centre this weekend for the annual Victorian Fayre.
The Christmas fair, which starts today and runs until Sunday, is now in its 17th year. Coachloads of visitors are expected at the annual event, which is one of the busiest weekends of the year for city traders. Last year, 100,000 people attended.
This year, stalls will once again line New Street, Charles Street, Friar Street, Pump Street and parts of the High Street.
For the first time there will be an arts and crafts area dedicated to local artisans in Friar Street, a prestigious new location for the city’s twin town stalls outside the Guildhall, and a larger international market in the High Street.
The traditional opening ceremony will take place in the Cornmarket at 5.30pm, preceded by a procession led by the Bishop of Worcester, the Rt Rev Dr John Inge, from Worcester Cathedral.
Georgia Smith, head of tourist body VisitWorcester, said: “Coach bookings are up on last year so hopefully it will be another great fayre with even more people coming along.
There are lots of new things for people to enjoy, such as the international market and the arts and crafts area in Friar Street.
“This year, stalls will go further down Pump Street and our twin cities have a new location on the High Street. There are about 140 stalls in total and they are all brand new green-and-white striped stalls which should make quite an impact and make the whole thing look better.”
There is also more live entertainment than previous years with a number of schools, choirs and musical acts performing throughout the weekend.
West Mercia Police have appealed to people attending the fayre to take care of themselves, protect their property – and be considerate about where they park their vehicles.
A spokesman for the force said: “While Worcester is a peaceful and safe place to visit, the expected thousands attending the fayre can help ensure their enjoyment, and that of others, by following three simple golden rules.”
