YOUNGSTERS from a Worcester school have been working hard to renovate a youth centre.
Pupils from Perry Wood Primary and Nursery School in Worcester spent two months decorating Medway Youth Centre in Ronkswood. The 19 youngsters, from year four to year six, undertook the hands-on project as part of the YMCA’s Dream Scheme.
They spent every Monday and Wednesday afternoon working at the centre, including giving it a new lick of paint.
The YMCA scheme is designed to help youngsters by encouraging them to do something practical.
The aim is to give them the confidence to succeed and show them that they can achieve.
YMCA youth worker Dave Phelan said: “We have been running Dream Scheme for several years now in other areas of the county and hundreds of school pupils have already benefited from participating.
“Here in Worcester, Dream Scheme has been greeted with enthusiasm by students, their parents, the schools and local residents.
“It is getting young people to put something back into the community in which they live, teaching them some basic life skills and then encouraging them to engage in school activities.”
Ange Beddow, headteacher of the school in St Alban’s Close, Newtown, said: “I am delighted with the Dream Scheme as it gives our children the chance to really shine, raise their self esteem and gives them a sense of pride about their community.” For more information about YMCA’s Dream Scheme programme contact Mr Phelan at Redditch YMCA on 01527 61643 extention 201.
