STAFF at a vehicle hire company say they have been left in limbo after the firm where they work refused to tell them if they are to lose their jobs.

Employees at Cartrux Vehicle Hire Ltd in Diglis, Worcester, were told the branch was going to close at the end of October, but it remains open and workers say that they have had little communication from managers about what is happening.

Jon Luxley, who has worked for the firm for 15 months, said staff just wanted to know if they had a job for Christmas.

“There are five of us that work here,” he said. “Our bosses came to us on Wednesday, October 21 and said we had until the end October and they were going to close the depot and some people would be made redundant and we were in a consultation period.”

Mr Luxley said they were then told it could be the end of November when the branch closed, but they have heard nothing more, despite trying to contact managers on a number of occasions.

“We just aren’t getting any answers,” said Mr Luxley. “We are in limbo over our jobs. We could be losing them now at the end of November but no one is saying anything. We don’t want to lose our jobs but if we are going to, it would be nice to know so we can go down to the job centre and start looking for new ones.”

Mr Luxley, aged 32, of London Road, Worcester, who delivers vehicles for the company which has its head office in Kidderminster, said the wait was very frustrating.

“It would be sad if we lost our jobs. We have mortgages and rent to pay and children to feed. It is ridiculous we haven’t been told anything.”

In a letter from managing director Bill Parsons, staff were told they would be contacted directly if affected by the consultation.

He wrote: “Whilst we will be working with all employees to try to find alternative work elsewhere within the Northgate Group there remains the possibility that employees will have to be made compulsorily redundant.

“We believe that these plans will create a stronger and more efficient business and will better position us to meet the challenges within our marketplace enabling us to deliver ongoing profitable growth, as well as protecting the interests of the remaining employees in these difficult and unpredictable times.”
