A HUSBAND and wife from Worcester have been left feeling shaken and vulnerable after burglars broke into their home while their three young children were asleep upstairs.

Thieves climbed over a fence into Steve and Karen Kelly’s garden before entering the house through the back door as the family slept. Youngsters Jack, aged six, Alex three, and Sam, 11 months, were all in bed during the raid early on Friday, November 13.

The burglars found the keys to the family’s silver Nissan Almera Tino then drove off in the car, which had blankets, clothes, toys, pushchairs and a baby carrier in the boot.

Thieves also stole the keys to Mr Kelly’s car but did not take the vehicle.

Mrs Kelly, of Warndon Villages, Worcester, said: “I woke up and looked out of the window and could see the car wasn’t there. My son’s car seat had been thrown on to the floor.

“I was in shock at first and it took a little while to sink in. But when I realised someone had broken into the house, it was really frightening.

“It was a horrible feeling to know someone had been in the house while the boys were asleep upstairs.”

Mrs Kelly, aged 35, who runs a natural health product business, said they have been forced to change the locks on her husband’s car and she now feels unsafe at home after dark.

She said: “I didn’t think being burgled would affect me this badly but now I don’t feel safe at home when it gets dark and I feel on edge the whole time.

“It is not a nice feeling knowing that someone was able to get into the house so easily. It makes you wonder how many times people have tried the back door before.

“My insurance company said I can’t have a courtesy car until the Nissan is recovered so I can’t go shopping or anything. The kids are too young to understand but they know something is wrong.”

Husband Steve, aged 47, an IT manager in Solihull, could not remember if he had locked the back door.

The latest crime figures for the Warndon Parish South Ward show there was one burglary in September, none in August, and three in July.

A police spokesman said that road safety cameras spotted the Nissan, registration DA04 GHV, being driven on Rainbow Hill at 4.20am on Friday morning. Anyone with information is urged to call police on 0300 3333000, quoting 84S/131109.
