A FATHER stole two £1 pairs of spectacles so he could visit his son in prison, a court was told.
John Smith, aged 63, admitted stealing the glasses from Poundland in the Shambles, Worcester, on Thursday, November 5 Worcester Magistrates Court heard Smith, of Liverpool Road, Ronkswood, casually removed the security tags from the glasses and threw them to the floor before pocketing the spectacles.
Susie Duncan, defending, said: “He wanted to visit his son who is in HMP Hewell.
“He thought that if he was arrested and charged and got a bail sheet with his name and address he would have some proof of identify that the prison would accept.”
Magistrates fined him £50 and ordered him to pay £50 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
