A FEMALE drag racing fan battling cervical cancer has asked businesses to sponsor her pink racing car to help raise money for Worcester’s St Richard’s Hospice.

Beckii Bomford, of Syne-hurst Avenue in Badsey, near Evesham, was diagnosed with cervical cancer last year, but wants to continue her passion for drag racing and raise cash for the hospice in Wildwood Drive.

Her husband Jason had bought her a Mitsubishi Evo 1V when she was “a bit down in the dumps” following her diagnosis.

She called it Mitsi, but was devastated when her beloved racing car was stolen in September.

The car was found abandoned in a ditch near Broad-way. Mrs Bomford was told it was a write-off, but she bought it back as salvage, repaired it and got it ready for racing.

Mrs Bomford, aged 29, said: “The first I knew about it (the theft) was when the police called at the door at 6am in the morning to let us know the sad news.

“I was devastated. My Mitsi had gone.

“She made me feel alive when I drove her and I for- got everything that was happening to me and my family.”

Her interest in drag racing and rally cars began years ago, and on Mother’s Day, Jason and her children, Nicole, 10, Jai, four, and two-year-old Jaq bought her tickets to race on a drag strip.

She plans to carry on drag racing and hopes that local businesses will respond to her sponsorship appeal.

As well as having cervical cancer, Mrs Bomford has a rare blood disorder called aplastic anemia.

She said: “I have been affected by cancer myself and I think that what St Richard’s Hospice does is amazing. “I know when I need St Richard’s they will be there with bells on.”
