SCRAP vehicles have been customised and accessorised by students at a Worcester college.

The Worcester College of Technology staged its biggest event ever for this year’s Colleges Week.

Organised by the Association of Colleges (AoC), they took on the theme of Pimp My Ride, a popular television programme. All last week, engineering students customised cars and motorcycles before the winning team was announced.

A spokesman for the AoC said: “Colleges Week is a celebration of the opportunities colleges create for individuals, businesses and Britain. This year the emphasis is on talent. The Pimp My Ride, event will showcase the high talents of engineering students and tutors at the college.”

Each day, a group of six students ‘pimped’ a car or motorbike, customising the car and its mechanics to suit their own tastes or designs. The students were to create their own designs and bring them to life. Last Friday, the final judging of the vehicles took place, where the winning team Mallory Park received a £500 voucher for tools and equipment.

The vehicles were ranked on their finish and how well they fitted to their brief. Mallory Park customised an R reg metro into a Children in Need themed touring car.

After colleges week, the students will have a chance to explain and demonstrate the skills they used to visiting pupils from schools in the surrounding area, and the college hopes this will show younger learners the opportunities available in more non-academic courses.

The spokesman added: “For the students taking part it is a great way of getting further recognition for their work. Events such as this provide students with valuable additions for their CVs, in turn making them more employable when they leave the college.”
