A SMOOTHIE-making bike was one of the highlights at a Worcestershire school’s green awareness week.

Children at Martley Primary School who are working towards their school travel plan and eco-schools status, were encouraged to travel to school in a more sustainable way.

To launch the idea of sustainable travel, the school organised a ‘Get Going for Green Week’ where they took part in activities including a walking bus, park and stride and family car share scheme.

They also had a smoothiemaking bike in school. Each class was able to make their own healthy fruit smoothie in an unusual way to raise awareness of healthy eating and lifestyles, and to show what ‘pedal power’ can do.

Fay Lyddon, teacher and eco-schools co-ordinator at the school, said: “The children really enjoyed the smoothie-making bike and were eager to get involved in the cycling.

“It was a fun way for them to become involved in and discuss sustainable travel and healthy living. The week has been a real success. The children, parents and staff have worked hard to think about the way they travel to school and have had the chance to try a new way of travelling to school.

“We will be continuing to think about and work on sustainable travel over the next year as well as focusing on other areas of the ecoschools curriculum such as fairtrade, saving energy and water.”
