MORE than 1,000 people packed into Worcester Cathedral last night to take part in a candlelit parade for the Lights of Love event.

The evening, run by St Richard’s Hospice, began at the cathedral by giving people an opportunity to gather and reflect. The service was led by hospice chaplain Rev David Knight, with the reflection by Jeannie Young, former hospice chairman of governors. Chief executive Mark Jackson gave a reading.

Pupils from St Mary’s School choir also sang during the service with soloist Kim Crawford from Pershore performing.

Many of the congregation joined in the candlelit procession to the Christmas tree in nearby St Andrew’s Spire, Deansway, for the switching on of the Christmas tree lights by Worcester Mayor Andy Roberts and Miss Worcester’s Leanne Groutage.

St Richard’s Hospice senior community fund-raiser Alison Parkes said: “We were very moved by the number of people who came to the event, it obviously meets a need for many people in remembering their loved ones. There were families and friends of people who are, or have been, cared for by St Richard’s alongside supporters, staff and volunteers.

“We have already received 2,000 dedicated names this year – the most we have ever had.”

Readers can still dedicate a light for love – whether in memory of a loved one, celebration of a birth or for someone who will be absent this Christmas but is still in your thoughts.

For a donation of your choice, a light will shine on the St Richard’s Hospice Christmas Tree throughout December.

The dedicated names will be printed in the Worcester News on Christmas Eve.

Names can be dedicated anytime up until noon on Thursday, December 17.
