DRAINAGE must be improved at in a Worcestershire village to prevent flooding it has been claimed.

Kempsey Parish Council heard about concerns from a resident living in nearby Kerswell Green, who had 18ins of water in his home during the summer 2007 floods.

“Who is responsible for the ditches being cleared out properly in Kerswell Green?” the male resident asked.

He said the ditches at Normoor Common had had “nothing done at all” and feared a repeat of flooding if the ditches, some of which have completed silted up, were not cleared.

John Michael, vice chairman, promised to visit the common over the weekend to find out where the problem areas were.

“The plan was next year to clear some of the vegetation and reinstate any ditches feeding the pond, because that’s the parish council’s responsibility.”

Fellow parish councillor David Harrison added it was Malvern Hills District Council’s responsibility to make sure ditches maintained by surrounding private land-owners were properly cleared.
