IT is an important time coming up for Worcester City with two games in 48 hours at St George’s Lane.
We host Welling United on Saturday and Chelmsford City on Monday in Blue Square South as we look to put the Eastleigh result behind us.
Our home form has been good this season and, if we can reproduce it, hopefully we can pick up some points.
Playing so soon after a Saturday game is not a problem.
Part of the reason we switched training from Tuesday nights to Mondays was to get into the mindset of playing on Mondays.
It also gives me the chance to go out and watch games, such as last night’s FA Trophy replay between Croydon Athletic and Burnham.
The change seems to be working after dominating against Basingstoke in August, the effort against AFC Telford in the FA Cup and last week’s win over Weston-super-Mare.
Even though we didn’t have a game the Saturday before the 4-1 win against Weston, we trained hard over the weekend and flew out of the traps on the Monday.
The attitude of the players in training is great whatever night we meet up but I feel it helps to train on the same night we play our mid-week home fixtures.
We are playing a lot better at home than away and need to start replicating that form on our travels because we had some good performances on trips last season.
There’s no reason why we can’t do that because we played well at Hampton and Richmond so I don’t think it’s anything pyschological.
But we didn’t show the same tempo in losing 4-1 at Eastleigh on Saturday.
That said, I would have been a lot more disappointed had we lost 1-0 in the last minute because I thought for at least 65 minutes we were soundly outplayed.
But it’s only three points dropped. The belief and confidence are still there and there’s nothing better than two back-to-back home games to sort things out.
I am looking forward to it and so are the players.
Hopefully, left-back Shabir Khan will be fit enough to train tomorrow after his bout of swine flu.
Midfielder Jordan Fitzpatrick is closer to being fit following an ankle problem as is winger Louis Bridges, which is a big boost.
Alfie Carter looked a lot sharper on the left at Eastleigh than he did as a sub against Weston.
Keeper Jake Meredith is desperate for a game and will get that chance at Stafford Rangers in the Central Conference next Tuesday.
Meanwhile, I shall be looking out for the FA Cup first round results this weekend to see how Stourbridge do against Walsall.
It’s good to see the local sides do well, as with Evesham last year, but sadly it’s not Worcester there.
But the main thing for us is picking up points on Saturday and Monday.
