Tony Blair's prospects of getting the EU presidency appeared to be fading amid serious objections in Europe.
The former Prime Minister, who received backing from his successor Gordon Brown, lacks support from the European Socialist group and Downing Street indicated that defeat was a clear possibility.
Speculation over the post came as EU leaders meeting in Brussels appeared poised to clinch Czech backing of the Lisbon Treaty, clearing a major hurdle to its ratification and the naming of an EU president.
