SHOEBOXES filled with gifts are needed for this year's Operation Christmas Child appeal in Worcester.

The boxes, which are given to children in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, are filled with items donated from city people and is being run by volunteers from the St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Pump Street, Worcester.

An open day is being held on Tuesday, November 3 for people to go and support the work they do at their unit at 1D Shrub Hill Industrial Estate. Running between 10am and 1pm, and again from 6pm until 8pm, the group is hoping to get lots more donations of items, such as soft toys, yo-yos, notepads, toothbrushes, hair clips and sweets, which have been put into a medium-size shoebox by the generous donor.

Volunteer Brian Hatfield said: “We are expecting about 6,000 boxes this year. We had slightly fewer last year because of the recession, but we are hoping to do well this Christmas.”

Boxes are needed by Friday, November 27. For more details visit standrewsworcester. org.uk or call 0781 5813892.
