THE belief to win games has returned at Worcester City and we can look forward to the rest of the season with optimism.
Monday’s victory over Weston-super-Mare now means we have taken seven points from a possible nine and by any stretch of the imagination that is decent.
Now we can start to target the six or seven teams above us in the league and get to where we want to be.
With only a third of the campaign gone, there’s a long way to go and three more points could put us in the top half of the league.
I know it doesn’t always work like that and teams have games in hand over us but the confidence is there.
The team are also believing in themselves again and that has been evident since the second-half of the FA Cup replay against AFC Telford.
That performance has made them realise they can compete with anybody in our the league.
Telford have got a lot of good players and, whether we gave them too much respect in the first-half of that replay I don’t know, but we had them pinned back after the break and they were hanging on.
They might only be 11th in Blue Square North but they are always around the play-offs.
However, those spells are when you have to score goals and we didn’t do that.
But against Weston we outplayed them for 75 minutes and took our chances.
It was nice to score four at home for the second time this season — no-one could’ve complained if we had scored six.
We have plenty of competition for places as well now.
Only 11 can play, but I have about 17 who are capable of starting games and keeping their places in the team so each week there will be unhappy players.
Whether we will get some more money from the board now that the crowds are beginning to come back, I don’t know, but hopefully the fans will stay. Weston hardly brought any supporters so the vast majority of the 800 were from Worcester which is a big plus and it puts a smile on my face.
Last season, we didn’t play great football and sometimes I wouldn’t have wanted to pay to watch us at home.
This year, however, we have been pretty entertaining and I think the fans are getting good value.
Even when we lost to Telford we got clapped off the pitch and that doesn’t happen very often at home with defeats.
On the injury front, Jordan Fitzpatrick is still a couple of weeks away from being fit and it’s the same with fellow midfielder Louis Bridges.
Rob Davies will be struggling to train tomorrow but his back injury sustained on Monday is not as bad as we thought, thanks to the efforts of physio Steve Ball.
It also was not so much of a worry because we had the likes of Graham Ward and Gary Walker on the bench.
