NEARLY half of all domestic burglaries in south Worcestershire are committed by thieves who get in through an unlocked door or an open window, say police.

Officers yesterday laun-ched an initiative focusing on helping people protect their homes and property from thieves looking for easy targets.

Operation Protect 2 is aimed at increasing home security and reducing the fear of crime, as well as tackling anti-social behaviour and vehicle-related crime.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Watson, the division’s most senior detective, said: “While we are committed to targeting persistent burglars and bringing them to justice to ensure our community remains a safe place to live, the public also has its part to play.

“South Worcestershire remains one of the safest parts of the country in which to live and work and, even though there are less than three domestic burglaries each day in the division, it remains a top police priority.

“We believe, however, that offences can be reduced even further if the public follow simple crime prevention tips to reduce the chances of being a victim.”

Police advice: How to keep intruders out of your house: Ensure doors and windows are locked at all times.

Fit sturdy deadlocks to all external doors.

Keep door and car keys in a safe place, out of sight.

Use timer switches/sensors in evenings and while away.

Increase external lighting.

Mark belongings with the recognised Smartwater system.

Always set alarms when leaving the premises empty.

Ensure newspapers, post, milk etc are not left on display.

Ask friends or neighbours to keep an eye on unoccupied homes.

Plant ‘defensive’ – prickly – shrubs and trees.

Ensure gates and fences are well maintained.

Put ladders and tools away so that they can’t be used to break in.
