JASON Williams may only have been on this earth for 23 short years but his name will never be forgotten in Worcester.
Private Williams died in August while serving with the 2nd Battalion the Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters) in Afghanistan – one of almost 40 British troops who lost their lives during a terrible summer.
Pte Williams, from Barbourne, is a true fallen hero, perishing as he attempted to retrieve the body of an Afghan comrade.
He has already been remembered with tears at his funeral. On Saturday he was remembered again, this time with smiles.
The special family fun day at Gheluvelt Park was a fantastic way to pay tribute to a man described as “always smiling”.
The day, which gave the public the first chance to see a memorial bench placed in the park to honour Pte Williams, featured a bouncy castle, live music, and a variety of other activities for young and old alike.
The event raised money for Help for Heroes and the Myeloma Trust and was supported by representatives from the armed and emergency services.
Worcester has a proud military history and a deserved reputation for honouring its heroes.
Saturday was no exception with civic leaders joining the crowds who enjoyed the day.
The fun day organisers said he would have loved the event.
We are sure he will have been looking down on such a special tribute. With a smile.
