STILL Breathing, the new work from 2Faced, proves beyond a doubt that the 10-year-old company is a force to reckon with in the world of dance.
The signature break-dancing, from which the company has grown, is still there, but 2009 sees an even greater fusion of contemporary dance with the moves for which 2FaCeD are renowned, but with no lessening of energy levels or impact.
Employing a set, stark and spare, for the first time, and a specially commissioned score from Anthony Murphy - of local band The Anomalies, Still Breathing explores the effects of living with ever-decreasing available space and exploring the space we occupy. Starting with the entire stage, the space in which the dancers moved gradually decreased, as the set edged in to contain them, leaving nowhere to move but upwards.
Eight fearsomely athletic dancers, each of whom put their own distinctive mark on the piece brought us 60 minutes of breathtaking dance that was, by turns, edgy, feral and exciting - with a final 15 minutes that, astonishingly after what had gone before, took the pace up a gear to provide a climax that was as exhilarating as it was exhausting and as mesmerising as it was menacing.
This was an hour of high-octane dance that left its audience Still Breathing, but with pulses certainly racing a little bit faster.
Still Breathing is at the Malvern Theatres on Saturday, October 17 at 7.30pm.
